A cholera epidemic takes nine-year-old Charlie Lynch's entire family, leaving him alone on the streets of New York's Lower East side. From New York, he was meant to be placed out to Kansas. Montana, a rancher who has met Charlie and was not allowed to adopt him because his wife is Mexican, takes matters into this own hands and takes Charlie off the train to his ranch where he grows to adulthood in a world of horses and his adopted family. Charlie still withdraws from most people. He spends more time alone with his horses and his dogs. When tragedy destroys his new family he has to choose between the world of men or solitude. He chooses solitude, until he meets a young who could change his life if he let her.
